Part One: Bulalungan sa Punta ng Manlayo
When torrential rains were pouring and inclement weather were looming at the horizon, summer is ended. Days like these, Manlayo fishermen though there were much to rejoice, but ends the summer in a way by stashing and storing their gaff hooks (gantso), hand nets (salok) and all the fishing tackles needed to catch jellyfish. There were retrofitting their boats by removing temporary bulkheads which they used for storing their catch at the forward section of every boat. They were doing it to avoid spilling the stingy slimes to aft. Soon they would no longer use such tackles nor the boat fittings till the next summer because the rainy days were yet to come. My cousins partly hated and partly liked the end of summer. That ambivalence towards post summer season is one of the many things fishermen like my father were always into. Southwest monsoon were coming and unpredictable squalls and stormy days were all bad outlooks to reckon with. Continue reading
